Coles was found guilty by the ACCC last year of misleading consumers over claims its bread was freshly baked in stores, in 2013. The ACCC has since fined Coles $2.5 million + costs for the claims that were likely to mislead consumers. "As the Chief Justice pointed out, it is important that sellers in the market recognise that consumers are entitled to reliable, truthful and accurate information." ACCC Rod Sims.

The Australian Government announced further consultation and research will be undertaken with the food industry and consumers, in order to “deliver clearer and more consistent” country of origin labelling for food sold in Australia. There will be a challenge to balance clear information to consumers , with flexibility and cost minimization for food producers. The Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane and Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce are due to make their recommendations to Federal cabinet in August 2015.
